What is Human Papillomarvirus?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that effects both females and males. Most types are harmless, do not cause any symptoms, and go away on their own.
What types of HPV are there?
Some types affect the genital area and are known as genital HPV. Other types are high risk and can cause abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix that can turn into cervical cancer. A third type of HPV can cause abnormal changes in the cervix such as genital warts or changes that are benign (noncancerous).
Who can contract HPV?
Anyone who has sexual activity involving genital contact can get genital HPV as well as transmit the virus without even knowing it. More than 6 million new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year.
What are the symptoms and treatment of HPV?
Because HPV may not show signs or symptoms most are diagnosed with a result of abnormal Pap tests. Most cervical precancers related to HPV can be treated successfully if detected early.
